Unexpected Upjog by Doc Docherty

The Unexpected Upjog is a mechanical method for producing one to several cards from a table spread. It happens instantaneously and automatically and is a surprising way to produce either a selection or the four Aces. The concept has no doubt been around for decades, but as far as we know, no sure-fire technique has ever been published…until now.

Doc Docherty, creator of the Groove Electric Switch, is at it again with another highly visual and not too difficult card sleight, this time in the form of a revelation – literally!

In this video, you will learn the Unexpected Upjog & the Unexpected Transposition, a transposition of the four aces and four kings that’s great for performing on the table.

Groove Electric Switch by Doc Docherty

Doc Docherty’s Groove Electric Switch is an indiscernible technique for switching an out-jogged card from a fan. Apart from its literal applications, it can also be used to force, control or change any card. Included in this 30 minute in-depth tutorial you will learn the basic move, five applications, and three routines utilizing the Groove Electric Switch.

“Groove Electric combines a clean mechanical action with an optical swindle, and the result is something beautiful to behold.” - David Regal

PAPERCUTS by Chris Hestnes

For the past few weeks, there has been everything from tweets to message board discussions about a secret card project. Speculation about what this could be has been across the board. One thing for certain though, we were in Norway for a week filming with four of the most prominent young magicians and flourishers in Europe: Allan Hagen, Chris Hestnes, Erik Jansson and Jordan Lapping.

Although all these guys are featured on the project, it’s Chris Hestnes with the starring role. Chris is the most well-versed flourisher we’ve seen arise in the past few years. Inspired by The System, and then later The Trilogy, he developed his own style and created some truly stunning pieces that have especially caught our eye.

Judging from all the photos and videos posted, you might have thought we were filming a movie. Well, no it’s not a movie, just one of the most high-end productions for an instructional DVD the community has seen, and we’re calling it: Papercuts. It will feature a collection of original flourishes created by Chris Hestnes.

Behind it all is Allan Hagen, the producer, director of photography and editor of the project. It is Allan’s artistic vision and experience working on films that will bring Papercuts to life like no other.

More about how the DVD came to be can be read here:

Our recent visit to Norway for a secret project

Last week we had the great privilege of visiting Trondheim in Norway. It’s a quaint little town full of wonderful people and beautiful sights, but that’s not why we were there.

About 4 years ago we first started hearing stories about a young group of magicians who could perform all our flourishes. We were incredulous of course. Soon though, we were introduced to them through video thanks to Allan Hagen. Witnessing their flourishes for the first time left us mesmerized. Not only could they perform the flourishes from The System perfectly, but they each had their own distinct style and repertoire of original ideas which was so refreshing to see. We were inspired and had to meet them.

It wasn’t until Blackpool 2009 that we all got together. They were, Allan Hagen, Chris Hestness, Erik Jansson and Jordan Lapping. After many sleepless nights sessioning and one kickass video, we knew we would eventually work together on something great.

About 6 months ago, Allan emailed us with an idea. After several replies, we knew it was time. We were on to something epic.

On August 3, 2010, we flew into Trondheim, hometown of Allan and Chris, for a week long shoot. As an avid amateur filmmaker and student of cinematography, Allan Hagen lead us through the most professional shoots we’ve ever experienced. With access to studio equipment, we took full advantage of it all and left with 650 GB of unbelievable footage.

As of now, we’d still like to keep specifics under wraps. However, details will come soon enough.

Eric Goldfarb EP

A collection of original sleight of hand techniques and routines by New York magician, Eric Goldfarb.

Explained is a new approach to “topping the deck” or palming a single card off the top of the deck. Eric’s method, called the Startling Palm, allows the fingers to remain open and free while the hand is able to relax and yet still invisibly retain a palmed card. Eric goes over many applications for this technique, including loading it into pockets, in the card box, and back on top of the deck as either a replacement or a color change – which is an altogether separate technique included called the G-Force Change.

Loaded is a new utility move for loading a card secretly inside a box. Unlike other methods, Eric has figured out a way to visibly show a card inside of the box before removing it. Loaded has many applications which Eric goes over in detail. One of our favorites completely disguises the move and can be used to switch out any card in the box for another.

Combining both these techniques, Eric then teaches two of his signature effects, Metamorphosis (shown) and Reloaded.

Magic Tricks Amuse In Extraordinary Times

“We live in a time where we expect to see amazing things before our eyes, like space ships streaking between stars. Dinosaurs returning to life. Whole planets blossoming with beautiful blue people. So how do you expect to impress people just by sawing someone in half or picking the ace of spades out of a deck of cards? Host Scott Simon visits the Conjuring Arts Research Center in New York to talk with director and magician William Kalush.” – Scott Simon, NPR

In this 9 minute interview Bill Kalush walks you through the Conjuring Arts Library and into the “rare book room” where  he talks about magic’s earliest feats dating back 5,000 years ago up until modern times where a discussion takes place on how technology has transformed magic.
