The Physics behind Shuffling Cards

Does anything happen at random? More specifically, is it possible to completely randomize a deck of playing cards? In this 30 minute lecture held at Stanford University Dr. Persi Diaconis (a former student of Dai Vernon) explains his mathematical system to the mixing of playing cards which changed the laws of Vegas.

At the end of the segment Persi proceeds to explain why coin tossing is not completly random but, like shuffling, relies on physics. Interesting stuff, if you can understand what he’s talking about.
