In this highly personal talk from TEDMED, magician and stuntman David Blaine describes what it took to hold his breath underwater for 17 minutes — a world record (only two minutes shorter than this entire talk!) — and what his often death-defying work means to him. Warning: do NOT try this at home.
A disenchanted magician (Jackson Walker), with the help of a lovely fairy, gains back his belief in magic. A short movie produced at Whitestone Motion Pictures, directed and edited by Brandon McCormick.
In this video, Dave Buck talks briefly about Magic-Con 2010’s Special Guest of Honor. Although his identity hasn’t been revealed, Dave does say, “He is one of the most universally respected performers, thinkers and creators of magic,” and that “You won’t want to miss the opportunity to see a true master and one of magic’s living legends.”
On December 1st, Magic-Con will proudly announce their 2010 Special Guest of Honor.

As a longtime fan and admirer of the TASCHEN art books, I have wondered when the “magic book” would come for severals years now. When I first heard it was going to become a reality a few years ago and that Mike Caveney and Jim Steinmeyer were involved, I didn’t think it could come soon enough. Anyone familiar with TASCHEN books knows they are of the highest quality and some might say as beautiful as the art they showcase. Expensive books they are (a few limited editions sell for upwards of $10,000), MAGIC is no exception and priced at $200. However, for a 650 page master archive of our arts history (1400-1950), is a a fair price in my opinion and well worth it. I have already placed my order and can’t wait to divulge its pages.
MAGIC, 1400-1950, is a book on the art of magic featuring 500 years of magic’s dazzling visual culture as a performing art. Read more information and leaf through a sample of the book on the TASCHEN website.
Howard Hamburg was the highlight of the 2009 GGG convention in San Francisco. The “D” Notes were printed in a very limited edition for that convention and immediately sold out. They have been positively reviewed and highly sought after. His stories and rich history with Dai Vernon and others have been recorded in this beautiful full-color booklet. Also included are 5 of Howard’s favorite effects complete with illustrations. Read more…
Hands down, one of our favorite books on card magic is Effective Card Magic by Bill Simon (republished as Card Magic For Amateurs and Professionals by Dover). The book is full of wonderful card magic tricks and sleights. And like the title suggest, it’s perfect for anyone interested in the subject. It will prove to be a great start if you’re just getting into card magic.
For us, the crux of the book lies in an essay at the beginning called Observations. In our opinion, it is a must read for every magician as it contains a wealth of information you adequately will benefit from. Simon goes over everything from how to practice, to presentation, theory, how to read magic books, how to incorporate flourishes, and so on. It’s a short read, but one of the most valuable. It’s hard to imagine this information was published in 1952 and yet it’s still so viable today. It’s a true classic and we strongly recommend it.
Shelter, a housing and homelessness charity in the UK, has set up a campaign to “to raise awareness of the housing insecurity facing millions of families in the UK.”
The campaign has also reached out to 52 artists and designers to create artwork of each card of a deck of playing cards. Artists involved include Alexander McQueen, Damien Hurst, Nick Park, Ron Arad and possibly YOU. The artwork will first be exhibited and then auctioned in aid of Shelter.
To find out how you can submit your own artwork for a chance to be included among the other artists involved, visit the House of Cards website.
They will also be producing a limited run of playing cards featuring the artwork of all 53 artists. (It is not a deck of cards, but A5 prints of the artwork.) The proceeds will go towards Shelter “and help people facing homelessness and eviction.” Register on their website and be the first to know when the cards are available.
See A Card is David Blaine’s first magic trick app on the iTunes App Store and it is fantastic. This is actually one of my favorite tricks to perform for people (with a real deck of course) and you can learn it here.
Here is a review I submitted through iTunes:
If you’ve never performed a trick for anyone before, this is a great foray into the power of magic. It’s simple to use and the effect is easy to follow, and stunningly unbelievable. As a professional magician myself, I perform the same effect regularly with a normal deck of cards and can say first hand, that it’s one of the strongest pieces of magic I can offer. Simplicity always wins, and this is one of the most simplistic tricks (in concept and execution) you’ll ever come across.
With the precision of this iPhone App, step into David Blaine’s world and lean to perform street magic in seconds.
